ERVING SCHOOL COUNCIL
MEETING MINUTES

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Laura Bezio; Charlene Galenski; Mary Glabach; Lisa Nuttelman; Pam Ososky; Sarah Scarchilli-Janus;

Meeting convened at 3:35

Charlene welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the year and introduced all of the members. The membership terms were reviewed and Sarah was appointed the Vice Chair. Charlene then distributed information and discussed the responsibilities of school council members.

The 2011-2012 school improvement plan was reviewed. Goal 1 involves the new Common Core Standards being implemented. Charlene stated that the school is in good shape with these standards. They are making good progress and have spent professional development working on these standards. The school is focusing on ELA only this year. The school council will work with Charlene with preparing an evening program in November to discuss the Common Core Standards to parents/guardians.

There has been a consultant hired regarding children with learning disabilities and she will work with staff on professional development days.

Goal 2 involves the promotion of computer literacy for staff. The first action item is to prepare a survey of technology needs. There is now a computer technologist that is willing to do workshops. There has been a request for excel training. A push should be made to make sure the students, especially 6th graders are computer literate. Attention needs to be made to which students have access to computers.

The school council will review the bullying intervention plan. It will be presented to the school committee in December.

There is a new after school program that is available 5 days per week. There is a desire for enrichment programs that will increase the number of students attending. It will be offered with some additional fees. School council members will research information regarding area after school programs, including Greenfield. Sarah will do general internet searching and Mary will check with Pioneer. Laura will see what information she can obtain regarding the extended day program in Greenfield. There is currently a certified teacher working in the after school program. The plan is to have a program offered in March and May. This will be revisited in December.

The council reviewed the parent/guardian survey and made suggestions for changes. Charlene will make the changes and have the surveys available during parent/teacher conferences.

Charlene would also like the school council to review the parent handbook this year.
