Erving Elementary School Library
Wow!  What a night we had on Friday.  Well over 100 people turned out to learn all about the human body and medical careers at Blood and Guts.  The folks from Franklin Medical Center said this may have been the biggest crowd they have ever had at this event.  They also said that Erving kids asked interesting and smart questions.  Three cheers for Erving!

Franklin Medical Center donated 4 bicycle helmets and 1 hardcover science book.  One hundred sixteen kids filled out raffle tickets!

It was an exciting evening, filled with exploration and learning.  Here are some of the things children wrote they learned at Blood and Guts:

"I learned fast food is fatty."
"I learned that your heart beats a lot of times in a minute."
"Never smoke."
"I learned that you should wash your hands at least 15 seconds."
I learned tar fills your lungs if you smoke."
"McDonald's is not good for you."
"I learned that your pulse oximeter should be more than 90."
"Your heart has four chambers."
"I learned that the ribs protect the heart."
"You can see bones with an x-ray!"
"I learned how to take blood."
"I should not eat fats and I should not smoke!"
"I learned about blood and cells and tumors."
"I learned all about the inside organs."
"I learned about our skeleton."
"You need to know a lot to be a doctor."
"Oxygen travels through your body with the blood to get to your heart."
"When you run fast your heart beats faster."
"I learned about the esophagus."
"I learned what germs look like."
"The body is important."

Thank you so much to everyone who helped set up and clean up, especially Joe Bucci, Ed and Naomi Cope, Emily Dubreuil, Paul and May Grzybowski, and Kayla Pecor.  We are especially grateful to the professionals at Franklin Medical Center and the nursing students from GCC who shared their knowledge and their time.  Lastly, we thank all of the families that braved the snow to attend Blood and Guts!  You make it all worthwhile.

Gail Dubreuil, school nurse, and Robin Shtulman, school librarian.
