Erving Elementary School Library
|
On Tuesday, February 7th, Cyd Scott visited our school library. Mr. Scott is an Erving parent and the owner of his own business, Custom Entertainment.
How would you like to go to parties for a living? That is what Mr. Scott does. He is an entertainer, a DJ, and an event planner. He helps people plan their weddings, corporate parties, and even benefit concerts. In recent years, he has been the organizer for two local concerts that helped raise $30,000 for musicians who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.
When planning an event, it is Mr. Scott's job to listen to everything that his client wants, and to "make it so." He pulls together the location, the entertainment, and the entire ambience of the event. Research and reading are an important part of Mr. Scott's job; he needs to research where he wants to advertise, and he needs to know all about venues and entertainers so that he can give his clients what they want. Honing his skills in reading and writing is as important as dressing appropriately: his customers expect that he will spell correctly, pronounce their names right and, generally, make a very professional impression.

Mr. Scott has been a DJ for 24 years. He also plays percussion and has been in lots of local bands that you may know: Loose Caboose, Pitchfork, and the Elements. He also has been a college professor of acting and stage design.
Mr. Scott talked with the students about how he chose his career. "It's easier," he said, "to be good at your job if you like it."
If you have a job you like that you'd enjoy sharing with Erving Elementary students, please call Robin Shtulman in the school library.
